That’s the size of my big tent’s floor. It is big enough for Beth and I and some gear. I have shared a tent of similar size with two other guys, but sometimes I like to go solo and take the big tent. It is especially fun on cold camping trips. Then the sixty-four square feet allow room for me and everything I need. I keep a few extra clothes, books, lanterns, and some personal items on the inside with me and a cooler and cooking stove in the vestibule. If it is so cold or so inclement and I need to spend long periods of time in the tent, I can just kick back, stay warm, and read, sleep, or think. If I’m hungry I reach into the cooler; if want a cup of coffee I make it on the stove in the vestibule; and if I am cold I grab a sweatshirt. Sixty-four square feet can very quickly become my world. When this happens something changes in my brain and suddenly changes in my world can be upsetting. Someone moving into the site next to me, making loud noises, or coming up to “say hi” can become irritants. It’s my world, my space and these people seem like invaders. I was here first, I’ve been here longest, I am in charge, and I make the rules.

This sure sounds selfish and petty on my part, and if I was rude, or tried to chase the interlopers away, you would be right. I don’t act rudely. But to avoid that, I do find that I have to change the way I am thinking to adjust to the changed circumstances, the current reality of my life. I suppose I could pull up stakes and move to a different park but realistically, in the end, we have no more places to run. So I adjust, at least I do if I want to be happy. Adjusted a group of loudly celebrating seniors in the next site becomes an opportunity to remember my days of youthful exuberance and acknowledge that I have been them. At seven the next morning, feeling relaxed and rested, I see one of them hunched over a smoldering fire looking cold and hung over. I give him my best “been there, man” look as I walk by on the way to my truck.

Maybe that is the way we are with our neighborhoods, our towns, our land, our churches, and our homes. We begin to think that they really are ours, that we own the space, that we control it. When someone comes into our space that is not like us in race, temperament, religion, or political preference our first reaction is negative. Someone who cooks with spices that smell strange to us, who speaks with an accent, who loves a person we would not choose, or who wants to change things. Maybe the seeds of racism, political hatred, stereotypes, and religious judgmentalism lie in allowing our hearts to turn hard because we are fearful and angry that our world is changing. I wonder if this is what comes from forgetting that the world is God’s and on loan to us? Is this what comes from forgetting that everyone who is here was placed here by God? Certainly we cannot allow cruelty, violence, or persecution to go unchallenged. We must stand against some things. But how much more peace, happiness, security, and community could we have if we learned to adjust to our changing world, to repent our selfishness, and to change the way we think.

<strike></strike>
That’s what I was wondering about in my borrowed sixty-four square feet in God’s world.

collared peccary

Saw a collared peccary today but didn't get a picture. We don’t burn them enough but we love campfires. I think the first time these particular logs were loaded into the wood box and placed in the back of the pickup was when I went to Robert’s Trailhead months ago. Beth was at a search committee meeting in Kearney and I decided to have a night out and a campfire. I remember that night for its spectacular sunset and star display. However, it was much too dry for a campfire and when the wind came up just before dark it was clearly no night for a fire. But a fire wasn’t needed. The night was warm and it was nice to sit with nothing to tend but my thoughts. At the end of that trip the unused logs were left waiting in the garage for another opportunity. That opportunity came a few months later when Beth and I went to Robert’s Trailhead. Once again, even though there had been some good moisture, the grass was still too dry and the wind too fresh to risk a fire. However, that first night the skies awarded us with a wonderful light show and no fire was needed. The second night is memorable because we decided to retire early when the breeze changed directions and became cold. That became the night of the sleet storm, when MacDonald’s breakfast sandwiches became more valuable as hand warmers than food. But that’s another story. The next time the wood made a journey with us we were hoping to camp overnight at Chadron SP but the weather was rainy, we considered renting a cabin with a fire place but decided to be wimps and save the money. Instead we dawdled in Chadron for a while, fru fru coffee and warm bread pudding with hot butter rum sauce. Again, the wood was stored within reach, ready to serve when needed, which brings me to tonight. A cold clear windless night, the fire is needed and the wood is available and ready to warm the night and bring the feelings of safety and security that a fire seems to do. To me this wood has much in common with faith. Our faith is always with us. We don’t always need it, there are days when the sky is bright and the breezes are warm, when our minds are at ease and our choices seem clear. Faith is close by, it is part of the journey but those times seem more for praise or simple thankfulness for life and opportunity. Then there are times when we are tried by the sadness of loss, the anger of betrayal, the stress of responsibility, what Scripture refers to as the cares and concerns of this world. At these times faith brings hope, forgiveness, peace and the knowledge that as St. Paul said, somewhere, “All things work together for good for those who love and serve the Lord.” This assures us that acting as God would want us, no matter how foolish, weak, or naïve it may seem, that it will lead to something better, restore wholeness, and bring love. Faith is nearby to us all, it does bring hope, it does give purpose and meaning to life but most importantly it brings the courage to self examine, to change and to act as Christ would and ultimately come one step closer to the kingdom.

Lunch

The girls are off to lunch after some fits and starts. type='text'>Lenetn Dialog Sermon

Direction: To be spoken slowly, with pauses, deliberately
I am old
30 years doing this
Saying pretty much the same thing
Stop fighting
Work together
Do the mission
Don’t be distracted by worldly things
Human things
Keep your eye on the prize
Repent
Change
I hear God saying it
Again
And again
In his word
Showing it in his Living Word,
His son,
Our Lord, Jesus
Reader: A reading from St. Paul’s 2nd Epistle to the Corinthians ((5:20b-6:10 (Message Version))
God has given us the task of telling everyone what he is doing.
We are Christ's representatives.
God uses us to persuade men and women to drop their differences.
To enter into God's work of making things right between them.
We speak for Christ now: Become friends with God; he's already a friend with you.
How, you ask?
In Christ.
God put the wrong on him who never did anything wrong, so we could be put right with God.
We are companions in this work
We beg you, please don't squander one bit of this marvelous life God has given us.
God reminds us; I heard your call in the nick of time;
The day you needed me, I was there to help.
Well, now is the right time to listen, the day to be helped.
Don't put it off;
Don't frustrate God's work by showing up late,
Or throwing a question mark over everything we're doing.
Our work as God's servants gets validated—or not—in the details.
People are watching us as we stay at our post, alertly, unswervingly . . .
in hard times, tough times, bad times;
When we're beaten up, jailed, and mobbed;
Working hard, working late, working without eating;
With pure hearts, clear heads, steady hands;
In gentleness, holiness, and honest love;
When we are telling the truth, and when God's showing his power;
When we're doing our best setting things right;
When we're praised, and when we're blamed; slandered, and honored;
True to our word, though distrusted;
Ignored by the world, but recognized by God;
Terrifically alive, though rumored to be dead;
Beaten within an inch of our lives, but refusing to die;
Immersed in tears, yet always filled with deep joy;
Living on handouts, yet enriching many;
Having nothing, having it all.
The Word of the Lord
Person in the crowd: Thanks be to God
Yes
Yes, Thanks be to God
For, the word of God
The Gospel, the good news
A sharp two edged sword that cuts bone and marrow
How can something that is supposed to be good news be painful, offensive?
The Pharisees tore their clothes at Jesus words
What did Jesus say?
Repent
Change
Person in the crowd: Who me?
You?
Yes, you and you
And us, together
Person in the crowd: all of us, together?
Yes, together, the church
I think God is calling the church to repent
Person in the crowd: That’s Crazy, the church is God’s people, we are the ambassador’s of Christ
Yes, that’s right, we are
I think God is sad and the devil is laughing
Person in the crowd: New words in our prayers
While people are dying in Africa because of war, famine and genocide
The church may be praying new words
But the church is silent
Person in the crowd: The church doesn’t get involved in politics
It’s not politics, it’s justice,
Justice, you know
What Jesus called righteousness
Person in the crowd: Do not bring us to the test, it’s “deliver us from evil”, always has been, always will
Those new words again, silencing us
First we battle,
Then we split
No time for mission when we are busy fighting
God must be sad, the devil must be laughing
Person in the crowd: Contemporary music, drums, rock and roll in the church
Another fight
While litter fills our streets, most of it recyclable
Landfills filled to overflowing, carcinogens leaching into our soil
Dancing and singing in the sanctuary but inactivity in the world
No time for mission when we are fighting
Person in the crowd: Recycling just isn’t cost effective, do you have any idea what it would cost
St. Paul also said, “The foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom”
Anyway, weren’t we created to be tillers and caretakers of the Earth?
The Earth
God’s first and good gift to us
Person in the crowd: Justice, caring for creation, peace, those are big jobs, those are God size jobs
I thought he worked through us
Person in the crowd: My church is small, I’m old too
Maybe together, like the universal church
The creed says that “one holy catholic and apostolic church”
Say, can we work together?
There is great strength in numbers
Sticking together is powerful
Person in the crowd: What do you believe about baptism?
That’s doctrine
Person in the crowd: Is the bread the body of Christ, really, or just a remembrance?
What about mission
Person in the crowd: Sexuality, women ministers, video screens, guitars, coffee in the sanctuary?
Feeding, clothing, visiting, forgiving, teaching, healing
Person in the crowd: How can we work together when we don’t agree?
It must make God sad and the devil happy
You know, hearing that we choose to be separate
Hey, where have I heard that before?
He heals on the Sabbath,
Person 2: But people were being healed
His disciple’s pick grain on the Sabbath,
Person 2: But people were being fed
He eats with sinners and tax collectors
Person 2: But there was fellowship, teaching, forgiveness
He allows himself to be touched, by a woman
Person 2: But all were included
Surely God was happy then, and the devil was sad
Person in the crowd: Doctrines are what keep us holy, pure
Jesus said mission is what makes us whole
We are his children
We were created for his mission
Person in the crowd: Children, where are our children, our young people
I don’t know, not here
I guess they just don’t like a good fight
I wonder if they would like mission?
I am old
30 years
Doing this
Saying pretty much the same thing
Change
Jesus gave us a mission
Repent
Person in the crowd: Who me?
Yes, you
And you
And me
And us
Person in the crowd: All of us
Yes, all of us
I think God is calling the church to repent
<img width='1' height='1' refused their first and only bid for a bowl game because the segregated south would not let their black players to play. Personally that a national championship in my book.

Then being one of only six colleges in Division one football to have a black head coach, again ground breaking. And what a head coach, coming from Nebraska where he learned under Tom Osborne, he has taken the Bulls from worst to first in three years.

I can remember playing football on the lawn in front of UB as a child. Once in a while a Bulls player would join us. That was a thrill for us. We looked up to them. Rick Warren is a leader of a church which does some wonderful ministry world wide but continues to preach and teach a message of exclusion rather than inclusion. I think that Obama missed an opportunity to give voice to those of us on the Christian left who understand Christ's teachings as a message of inclusive and believe that God is calling all people to himself.

There would have been so many other wonderful choices like the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church Katharine Schori or one of the leaders of the United Church of Christ like The Rev. The truth is Jesus was probably never the reason for the season. In fact, what we now call Christmas probably started as the pagan festival of winter solstice (and the god Saturn) which culminated on December 25th with the celebration of the annual rebirth of the sun god. People celebrated the festival with gift-giving, feasts, singing, parading and immoral activities lead by the priests of Saturn who decorated the temples with evergreen boughs. Later, in the first century, the day was usurped by the early church and given a Christianized meaning, becoming the celebration of the birth of the Son of God. By this action the church hoped to draw the faithful away from pagan celebrations, immoral activities and, what was to Christians, the sacrilegious activities of the main stream society of the times.

Just 150 years ago most protestant churches would have been dark on Christmas. Following in the footsteps of our puritan forebears, who tried to have Christmas banned in England and the Americas.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 220px; height: 279px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_yHL2XPcIwwI/SURDWse22VI/AAAAAAAAAJU/aoDQ9Dw3L44/s320/Increase+Mather.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5279418720361830738" />
In 1687, Puritan Pastor Increase Mather said "The generality of Christmas-keepers observe that festival after such a manner as is highly dishonorable to the name of Christ. How few are there comparatively that spend those holidays (as they are called) after an holy manner. But they are consumed in Compotations, in Interludes, in playing at Cards, in Revellings, in excess of Wine, in mad Mirth ...". For a short time celebrating Christmas was actually banned in the Massachusetts colony.

As our society becomes more pagan in its actions and beliefs, December 25th is simply returning to its roots, updated and Americanized to become a season of buying, selling, excess and not unlike the Roman solstice celebration gift-giving, feasts, singing, parading and immoral activities.

Christmas is named for Christ-mass. A reference to the mass of the Nativity of our Lord celebrated at theologically catholic churches. However, it can be loosely understood as the liturgy of Christ. Liturgy is what we do to worship God. In this light, Christmas is worship, it is what we do to worship the Lord.

So what should a Christian to do? Celebrate Christ by worshiping him with temperance. Be moderate in your celebration, keep it holy. Be righteous in your celebration. Participate in something that will bring justice, peace and mercy into the world. Be wise in your celebration. Don’t go into debt, don’t squander your time, talents and treasure in an attempt to be momentarily happy, instead go for the joy that comes from God. Have the courage to be different and celebrate differently than society. Hope and work for things eternal. Have faith in Christ. He is more than a reason for a season; He is your Lord and the answer for a sin sick world. Love God heart, soul and mind and love your neighbor as yourself. Finally, remember, Christmas is a season; Christianity is a way of life. Do these things every day.

I now understand Phil

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 278px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_yHL2XPcIwwI/SUEwjo2V9DI/AAAAAAAAAJM/JUJBmviTOnE/s320/Phil+Helmuth.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5278553627073836082" />
I was watching Phil Helmuth during the World Series of Poker. He would most often call them idiots for the way they played, for staying in a hand and betting a poor hand. You idiot he would yell. After all he is called the "poker brat" with good reason.

The last couple weeks I have been playing poker on line. Play money not real. Last night I started out with 2700 chips. Over the course of many hands I lost most of them on three hands in particular. The first I was holding three Jacks at the turn and bet a large amount and was called. On the river my opponent made a flush. On the second I was holding the nut flush in hearts. Again I bet and was called. On the river my opponent made a full house. On the last I was holding pocket 10's. My opponent raised big pre-flop I called thinking at worst I was in a horse race (50/50 chance of winning) The flop was 3, 6, 10. The turn a 9. The river a 5. The only hand that could have beat me was four, deuce. I bet and was called. My opponent was holding 4-2. I found myself yelling at the computer, "You idiot, how could you have bet that pre-flop and then stayed with just a gut shot straight draw? You idiot." OH well it is fun but I doubt I will become addicted.

Face Book and Internet social sites is another matter. I made the commitment at CREDO to learn more about social networking sites as a means of staying in touch with family and friends and to find out how that might help the church and its mission. Virtual Church, in my opinion is the future if the church is to have one in this society.

I am amazed at all the possibilities, I had no idea, It all makes me feel old and hopeful at the same time if that makes any sense. How to become a fan of something? etc. etc.

Oh well back to the learning curve.

Finally made it to the top

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_yHL2XPcIwwI/ST8CZwrJLJI/AAAAAAAAAJE/209Y_34-2sI/s320/Land+Slide+Show.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277939929887354002" />
MDF and I have been playing a board game named "Ticket to Ride" and recently we started keeping a won loss record. Where the brother is dressed up like a turkey in the summer camp musical and shouts the refrain "Eat Me". But I digress.

Had a great thanksgiving day yesterday. Celebrated with a couple friends from the church. MDF and I prepared the usual items. Turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing and squash with Dutch Apple pie with ice cream for desert. Our friends provided cranberry salad, green bean casserole and a nice bottle of white wine. I believe a good time was had by all.

Tried something different with the squash this time. Since it is a fruit I tried a variation on bananas Foster. I peeled (what a pain) an acorn squash and cubed it into about 1/4 squares and sauteed this with a liberal butter (it's thanksgiving, at least one pound of butter must be used in the preparation of the meal) for about 15 minutes just until they began to soften and brown. Then I added about a tablespoon of brown sugar and turned up the heat a bit and mixed it until the sugar began to caramelize. I then added a dose of Jack Daniels and lit it off and served hot immediately after the flames went out. It turned out well, enjoyed it but the recipe is not yet perfected. I would recommend that you just barely under cook the squash, too done gets mushy, firm is better. Also the Jack worked well but this would be better with Brandy or perhaps rum. Also it could have used a spice but I was unsure what to use. Nutmeg perhaps. Any ideas on something that might add just a bit of crunch to it? Thoughts?

Have any of you tried anything like this? How did it work? Suggestions?

What Vegetable are you?

What Vegetable are you? For now I can just say a few things about it.

First and foremost thanks to all the people who shared the experience with me; other participants, the staff, MDF and family and the members of the congregation. Thanks to all of you for allowing the opportunity to experience CREDO, helping to finance the experience, and listening to my story and sharing yours.

Second, it was a great time of learning for me. Making a CREDO plan for growth in the areas of spiritual life, health, vocation and finances was a journey of self discovery and healing. My plan has three major components; setting aside more time for those things about which I am passionate, seeking new ways to keep better contact with family and friends and relationship building and maintaining and living more authentically, more wholly, which for me means bringing the different aspects of my life into harmony as opposed to living them separately.

Lastly just a few quotes that struck me in special way during the conference.

"If you are hungry someone will give you something to eat. If you are
homeless someone will give you shelter. If you are penniless someone will
give you money. If you are boundary less, then you get something more to
do. "

This is not an exact quote from Sister Joan Chittister so with apologies "No one grows up by doing what they are forced to do but only when we choose to grow by our decision to become what we can by doing what we must." If anyone knows where to find the full quote and directs me to it I will amend this post.

Our decisions matter. They have eternal consequences.

Catch you all later thanks for reading.

Blizzard

Well the snow turned into a howling blizzard. To give you an idea of how bad it was, the snow was so intense last night that our satellite dish could not get a signal. The plane to our airport had to be diverted to a different airport because conditions were too dangerous here last night.

These are a couple views out our back door this morning. The snow is wet, heavy and icy which is a good thing because if it weren't the wind would whip it into huge drifts.

Our neighbors apple tree is always a source joy. In the spring it is full of pink blossoms, in the summer it is rich and green, in the fall it offers apples and in the winter when storms like this come it is covered in white and sparkles in the sun.

That's the bad news if a beautiful storm can be called bad. The good news is that I am home, being freed from some meetings and other commitments and can put my attention to packing and completing my preparations for CREDO. I was to be the host of our guild meeting morning and I had prepared homemade cinnamon buns for the meeting and now MDF and I get to eat them this morning fresh and hot from the oven with homemade butter cream frosting. But we have had a super fall so no complaints here.

Tomorrow MDF and I go to the town board meeting to stand in support of creating a zoned area for recycling in the town. This is the first step in getting permission to actually have a recycling building where we can begin to recycle larger amounts and handle cardboard and plastic other than 1 and 2. That would be great!

Then Friday is the start of Annual Council and I have to do an interactive display during registration and meet and greet on hosting the new website program the diocese has started using and recommends. That I am the one doing this display is a clear indication of why the Episcopal Church is so far behind in using technology effectively. However, I am learning and actually doing the church website has been fun and it is being used with some effectiveness within the congregation. Posting worship schedules and Bible study notes for those who missed class seems to be working well and today I added a green section for environmental news and green living ideas.

The Annual Council ends on Saturday and then early Sunday I am off to CREDO. I am looking forward to going. The prep work has been interesting, challenging and revealing so I hope that the conference will help me to clarify and center while building the action plans. Then the real challenge will be working the plan and attaining goals.

Catch you next week.

This was a fantastic weekend in the panhandle. Low to mid 70's sunny and just a light breeze. It doesn't get any better than this so MDF and I took a great hike, one we had never done before, in Chadron State Park. They have a new superintendent and he is really trying hard to re-establish lost trails and build some new ones. The one we did was Yellow Tail about 3 miles of moderately strenuous walking.

We both really enjoy Chadron State Park. It is one of the prettiest in the state, we think, not that we have been to them all but I think it is fair to say we have been to a majority.

We talked with one of the rangers at the park and she told us bout the new super and some of the things he had planned for CSP and we were excited because of the plans for the trails but also because she told us that he was in Ponca State Park, another one of our favorites, checking out the Halloween Party they have there each year. That is a great time. We have been there for the scary hay rack ride and the other activities Halloween weekend and it is a blast.

So we left our name and are considering volunteering at CSP to help with the trail building and maintaining. I thought this would be a way we could get some exercise, get out camping more often and do something good for others who enjoy hiking and the environment.

Here are a couple pictures of views from the trail.

She also told me about a couple great hikes in the wilderness area that surrounds the park. Can't wait to give them a try!

We Voted

MDF and I went to the court house yesterday and voted. You are standing on Cedar Ridge in Wild Cat Hills State Park looking toward Scottsbluff.

Packed out some beer cans that had washed down into the ravine and some paper that was blowing around. I want to give a shout out to my son in law, Phollower, for getting me started doing that. The food did turn out wonderful and some members chipped in some excellent dips and appetizers and bars for desert. The slide show went well and there was time to talk about some of the basics of renewable resource management.

I went to a member's house a couple days later and we finished off a bottle of my favorite spirit (aside from the holy one) Bombay and I offered to take the bottle for recycling and she said "No, I recycle now. I started after your sermon on preserving the earth for our children and grandchildren." I was thrilled to hear that my teaching has made a difference in people's lives, reconfirming that everything we do has an impact, it's just that we often don't see it. Perhaps that's why I like the movie "It's a Wonderful Life" so much.

Also the dedication of the new National Cemetery went well. It was a very cold day but the High School Band played very well and I was honored to participate. The picture is from the dedication and shows from left, in the cowboy hat, State Senator LeRoy Louden, Congressman Adrian Smith, Gov. Dave Heineman, speaking, John Hilgert, State Director of Veterans Affairs and myself. It windy and I am holding, so it doesn't take off, the big check for 4 million plus from the National Cemetery fund to start construction of the cemetery. The following is my prayer of dedication.

"Lord God, you have shown us through your Son that the greatest love is the love
expressed in the actions of those who give their lives for others. So, we give thanks to you for the blessings we have received at the hands of those courageous men and women who have served and fought and died for us in the service of our country.

Today our thankfulness brings us to this place, to break ground for a final resting place for our sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters and friends who have honored us in their lives with their commitment to peace, security, and freedom. We ask that you would bless this land, which we set aside today as a National Shrine, that it may always be a place of peace and beauty where the gifts and lives of those who will rest here are remembered and honored.

Bless us too, that we being inspired by the remembrance of our honored dead might never take the country they served or the freedoms they protected for granted. Let us so cherish their memory that we too will stand courageously in service to the cause of freedom justice and peace in our own time and in our communities, the nation and the world. Amen. Speaking about Obama, the woman said "When the flag goes by he doesn't even put his hand over his heart and he wants to be our president. I wish somebody would shoot him." I said said "What a terrible thing to say, to wish anyone would be assassinated." To which she replied, "Must have pissed off a Democrat." MDF then said, "No a Republican." Which she is, as yet, I have been unable to win her over to the libertarian camp. I am sorry our rebuke was not stronger.

I am an Obama supporter so my bias is out. That aside, I am truly disturbed by the rhetoric of this campaign and disappointed by those who would continue to perpetuate the lies that lead to this kind of talk. Obama is Muslim, Obama is linked with terrorists, Obama is unpatriotic, and un-American. Nice excuses for holding thinly veiled racist thoughts that are wrapped in a package that looks like concern for America and honest political debate. Thank you John McCain for pretending to be honorable and decent, while running a campaign full of smears on your opponent’s character and negative ads full of this type of crap that fuels the fires of hate and ignorance.

One note about flag etiquette: http://www.usflag.org/ says that all persons not in uniform should face the flag and place their hand over the heart when the flag passes, during the national anthem and when saying the pledge. I was taught differently. In elementary school I can remember being taught that, when not in uniform, you stood at attention when the flag passed and during the national anthem but that you placed you hand over your heart in salute only when saying the pledge. Perhaps this is what Obama was taught as well. Regardless flag etiquette should not be a litmus test for presidential qualifications. I think we have bigger fish to fry.

Does anyone remember the late 60’s and early 70’s when people, especially those with long hair, were being arrested and fined for desecration of the flag for having the flag on pants, shirts, motorcycle gas tanks and etc. Times sure have changed. I wish they were changed because we now understand that those long haired freaky people with flags on their jeans were loyal, patriotic Americans who were voicing their opinions because they were concerned about the direction our country was moving in Viet Nam and throughout the world. However, clearly that is not the case since we have become even more rigid and closed in our debate of issues in this country. Now we just deal with those with differing opinions in less direct, passive aggressive, ways.

In my opinion, a country (or any institution) without a vigorous and open date of the issues, without acceptance and respect for those who share different views, is a very sterile institution and a democracy on the decline.

Land Slide Presentation

Spent the morning cooking; chili, cauliflower cheese soup and stew and baking beer bread, corn muffins and pita bread for the super at church tonight. We are hosting the meal to let the congregation know what we do on vacation and to answer all the questions we get about the farm. We get asked a lot about what we do at farm and what it is like. We hope this will help them understand why it is a passion of ours and why it is important that we have an extended period to be there each summer.

I am going to use some of the time as an opportunity to talk about ecology and environmental issues like sustainable forestry and responsible land use. They are pretty receptive to “green talk” in the parish but there really isn’t much going on in our community to support environmental issues. I am hoping that St. Matthew’s can become the “green church” and that we can be stronger advocates for change and add our collective voice in support of the initiatives that are starting like getting a real recycling center.

We are taking baby steps now like moving away from using disposable products for our coffee hours and meals and using china and silverware instead. We are also beginning to recycle in our church kitchen and encouraging all members to be recyclers. To some readers this may sound like “duh, I can’t believe you are just getting into this” but the truth is with Nebraska’s low population and significant land area it is difficult to make recycling a break even proposition, not that everything needs to be profitable but it sure helps when trying to get town boards and tax payers on board, because all our recycling needs to be hauled such long distances to major centers. For us the nearest city with a population over 25K is 2.5 hours or about 180 miles. Also there is just so much land here that it is easy for opponents to say land fills are much cheaper and there is, I think, a general perception that we will never run out of spaces to dump.

So it is a process of education, awareness and action. Isn’t everything!

Baby steps lead to running and jumping.

Restart

I am going to make a concerted effort to be faithful about blogging and checking/reading the blogs of my friends as a means of starting in contact. I know I did start this once and then allowed life to interfere and stopped taking the time to do it. Getting caught up in what should be done as opposed to what is most valuable to do is problem for me. So with your forgiveness I will start again.

This Friday I am heading out to offer the invocation at the ground breaking for the newly established Nebraska Veterans Cemetery. The cemetery has received national shrine status and will be on ground that during World War II was a large military base where most of the paratroopers and glider pilots and glider soliers trained for the invasion of Europe on D Day.

I believe it is important for all of us to honor and respect the men and women who serve us in conflicts in far away places. While I do not support the war in Iraq I do think is is important that we as a people do not take out disgust with the war out on those who serve. They should all receive the best care (medical, psychological, etc.) we can provide in addition to our respect.

Anyway I will do my part in establishing this National Veterans' Cemetery and honoring those who served and serve while at the same time voting and supporting those who will bring an end to this current war.
